What to expect?

Building on the Herbs 𝄞 Harmony evening sessions, which have been running since Autumn 2024, this is a special day long experience which invites you to immerse yourself in the magic of plants and voice.

Throughout the day, we’ll meet plants in intuitive and imaginative ways, allowing space for collective singing and voice exploration. Our goal is simple: to give ourselves and the group permission to play, explore, and create. This will happen through connection: connecting to our voices, our bodies, each other, and the plants around us. Our intention is to facilitate meaningful experiences, meeting each participant exactly where they are.

All plants offer doorways into a deeper knowing and we invite you to explore these doorways with us. This course offers an imaginative and intuitive approach to herbalism. Whilst we may discuss particular ways in which the plants have been turned to for human ailments, we will focus more on the embodied experience of the herb. There will be elements of storytelling involved too, guiding us gently into a space of imagination.

By the end of the day, you will have many a song relating to the natural world in your pocket as well as 2 or more herbal friends. You will have a new appreciation and deeper relationship with yourself, the natural world and your voice and hopefully you will go back out to the world wanting to share your voice more!

What does Tara say about Collaborative Vocal Improv(isation)?

In the practice of Vocal Improv, we come together to sing what’s alive for us in the present moment. Through gentle guidance and playful explorations we practice letting go of our judgment and welcoming ourselves fully. We follow our voices as they guide us through the marvellous landscapes of our being. We sing, sound, connect, and express. We move with the rhythms of our bodies, bathe in rich harmonies and follow our breath into flowing melodies. We support one another, listen to one another and sing with one another freely.

There are no right or wrong ways of singing. This practice is about connecting to our innate human capacity to sing and make music together. It’s an inclusive practice, where the only requirement is a willingness to follow your curiosity and your voice to where it might take you.

Rough structure of the day

Arrivals will be from 9:30am where you can come and settle into the space. We will then gather together and begin by warming up our bodies and voices. During the day we will; sing songs that celebrate our natural world and foster connection to ourselves, others and the non-human world; we will drink cups of herbal tea together and tune into our different senses, travelling an imaginative journey with the chosen plant; and we will explore vocal improvisation techniques inspired by the plants.

We will have lunch together - Tara and I will make a big soup for everyone and bread and participants are encouraged to bring food to share.

If the weather is good we will explore the gardens and grounds of Michael Hall too. There will be plenty of space for reflection, reverence and fun!

This workshop is for you if…

  • you want to sing freely and connect with your voice and the natural world in playful, wondrous ways.

  • you’d like to develop your relationship to the natural world through medicinal plants that grow on these lands.

  • you want to let go of some self-judgment around singing and explore intuitive ways to connect with your voice, letting it flow freely and naturally.

  • you’d love to explore some of our favourite Vocal Improv forms, games and exercises, to take into your personal practice or to share with your singing group.

  • you need more magic and play in your life!

Your guides for the day

Hannah Robson

You can find out more about me and my approach here but in short, I’m Hannah, your storytelling, song-sharing herbalist. I run weekly community singing groups as well as seasonal workshops such as Herbs 𝄞 Harmony.

Tara Mexi

“I’m a singer-songwriter with a fascination for vocal improvisation and have dedicated myself to studying this artform over the past decade. I’ve learned from inspiring teachers like Briony Greenhill and Guillermo Rozenthuler and was introduced to the Musica do Circulo approach by Pedro Consorte and Zuza Gonçalves.

I draw from a background in classical singing, orchestral composition, and applied theatre, as well as from my love of wild singing in nature and singing with the Stroud Vocal Improv Ensemble to shape how I share this practice.

I’m passionate about holding spaces where people can reclaim their voices. I run Singing Mamas sessions and hold Wild Voice singing circles for women. For the past four years I’ve been leading regular Vocal Improv sessions and day-long deep dives in the Stroud area, growing the local improv community and sharing my love for this enlivening way of singing together.”

Testimonials from past participants of Hannah’s courses

“Herbs and Harmony was one of the most powerful experiences I've ever had meeting and exploring plants, and having the encounters with each one assisted and complimented by beautiful songs made it magical. Thank you so much Hannah for the way you held the group so gently and profoundly, would recommend this experience to anyone.” Poppy Lewis-Brown, 2024

“This is way more than an incredible learning about herbs and song; I’ve found it to be a whole new practice with existential implications; what wonders unfold when we are fully present and open to the awesome gifts of the universe as their energies and properties flow through us.” Tristram Stuart, 2024

“This course has been truly wonderful. I am so grateful for connecting with and learning about medicinal plants in this way. Now I feel I can develop this independently to connect with more plants. The classes were so rich and perfectly balanced with gorgeous singing in harmonies and rounds timed with the seasons and the plants. One plant in particular has become a great friend at this time.” Lucy Pearce, 2024
